Artist Statement

Following the sale of her company, Hauck Research International, Liz had the time to refocus on her painting, initially painting with water colour and taking life drawing classes. She was subsequently encouraged by her teacher to take a place on the Degree Course in Fine Art at the University for the Arts in Wimbledon.

She now works from her studios in Surrey and Devon. Financially independent, Liz donates all the proceeds from the sale of her work to charity. For her, this is a wonderful opportunity, ‘being able to do something I love and at the same time to contribute to causes that I care about is very fulfilling’.

Her oil paintings are abstract and expressionistic. She describes her painting process as ‘experiential, with feelings, experiences and memories fusing as new forms arise until the image reaches an inner harmony which feels right’.

Liz seeks to create ‘inner expressions of states of mind rather than representations of the natural world’. She strives to ‘regain contact with my emotional self through intuition, reflection and contemplation, and with the ephemeral and ever-changing nature of one’s reality’.

Her inspirations are literal and specific, but the process is expressional. Frequently, the starting point is a form taken from nature. The creative process is ‘similar to the improvisation of a jazz player: a kind of riffing and experimentation around the initial idea using colour, shape and texture. As in jazz, I employ discordant elements to highlight a visual harmony.’

As she explains ‘the ‘meaning’ of the work doesn’t lie in what can be recognised, but rather ‘in how a painting makes the viewer feel, the memories and images that they stimulate and the particular and idiosyncratic emotional responses that they evoke.’

Liz employs colour and texture to create evocative images – vibrant yet subtle colour adjacencies and rich textures achieved by palette knife and sgraffito techniques. The paintings range in size from 15cm x 15 cm to 80 cm x 100 cm.

Following a very successful Surrey artists Open Studios Exhibition which sold 36 paintings and raised £8,325 for The Eve Appeal for gynaecological cancer research we are delighted that Liz has joined The Art Agency and is participating in our November show in the gallery.
