Featured Artist - Noel Paine
Since February 2010, Noel has been working in the hillside village of Anticoli Corrado, Lazio.
The village has a long and established history of visiting artists both within Italy and internationally, in particular from England. Previous artists have included JBC Corot, Oskar Koschkaoka, Fausto Pirandello, Peter Lanyon, and, more recently, the ‘Master Faker’, Eric Hebborn.

Noel has come to Anticoli Corrado, for two reasons.
Firstly, the location. The landscape has an abundance of vegetation, rock formations,
historical buildings and trees, high up in the Aniene Valley about 80km from Rome.
Secondly, Noel chose the village because he wanted to begin working inside a studio again,
which he had not done since leaving London in 2008.
When making paintings outside the demands are different, and the process in making the work is different. Noel is dictated solely by what is front of him, the light and the constant
changing landscape. However, now back in a studio he has greater time to contemplate the course a particular painting may take.
He has begun making a series of paintings using drawings done directly in the landscape. This is a similar process he used for his London paintings. It allows him greater time to consider composition and colour. He is also able to be more selective in his drawing, and ideas.
Noel hopes to complete a new series of ‘studio based paintings’ later this year, and into 2011.
