Charles Penny - current work
I seek to convey spontaneity in my approach, depicting strong light and vivid colour. I want the works that I make to reflect the reality and mood of the subject, and at the same time to be seen as splashes of pure colour.
Charles was born in 1952 and spent much of his childhood in Tangier. The striking colours and light of Morocco have greatly influenced his work, and he is still inspired by his visits to the Mediterranean, especially Greece and Morocco.
Closer to home Charles finds the English coast with its weathered seaside architecture, and quirky subject matter is equally stimulating.
A recent visit to Antigua has allowed him to make the best of both worlds by combining the hot light and colour of the Caribbean with its local wooden houses and roadside stalls, reminiscent of English beach huts but in glorious colour , These he paints in watercolour on site and then reworks them back in the studio with oil paint
Charles has exhibited widely in the UK, America, Japan and Morocco and consequently his work is in many public and private collections worldwide
He was educated at schools in England and Switzerland and later graduated from Kingston Polytechnic with a degree in Graphic design.
Having first worked as an illustrator and printmaker Charles now dedicates his time to painting and teaching.
Charles lives in Putney, London
