Greg Miller-Hard - current work
For the last two years I have been working to combine the art of photography with the science of photographic technique.
Each flower demands a different approach. Lighting, composition and creating sharp focus throughout brings the subject into its own special realm.
Greg's introduction to floral art was botanic illustration when he studied science at the University of Auckland. To pursue his love of photography he trained with some of Australia's master photographers, after which he began shooting for a wide variety of clients.
For the last two years Greg has been working to combine the art of photography with the science of photographic technique. Having tuned his craft over the last twenty years
he is now developing images using unique layering process that allow him to illustrate visions of nature as fine art - creating a Bee's eye view of the flower.
These images are created as an exploration of the inner sanctum of the flower. This came about as a fusion of Greg's passion for photography and his long standing
botanical interests. Minuscule detail captured from the specimen and liberated onto the printed medium.
Macro photography and the human eye are constrained by respective parameters. These limit the ability to render detail accurately in the third dimension. Photography has the constraints of optics - depth of field and limited tonal range.
Our eyes are constrained by the inability to focus at extreme close range.
Each flower demands a different approach. Lighting, composition and creating sharp focus throughout brings the subject into its own special realm.
After studying Zoology, Botany and Geography at Auckland University Greg moved to Sydney and trained for five years as assistant to some of Australia’s leading photographers.
Since 1990 he have been working worldwide for a wide variety of Clients and his published works include : National Geographic Traveller and NG World, Conde Nast Traveler, ADAC Germany, JAL, Qantas, Air NZ in-flight magazines, Vogue Living and Harpers Bazaar.
Greg draws inspiration from the work of the late New Zealand artist, Pat Hanly, who painted a famous series entitled 'Inside the Garden' in the late 1960's. Pat explored nature on a molecular scale creating wonderful vibrant abstract paintings that portray a world within our world. Further inspiration also comes from the art of Georgia O'Keefe, Irving Penn and Imogen Cunningham.
Greg has also produced a book on Summer at Sydney's famous Bondi Beach, awarded at the prestigeous Eddie Adams workshop in Catskills New York state plus received a National Geographic internship.
Having returned home to New Zealand 8 years ago he now lives in the beautiful Bay of Plenty with his English wife Nicole and two young children.
