Jane Drown - current work
Seascapes and natural environment provide much of my inspiration
I have been working in ceramics for 15 years, and only relatively recently became ‘hooked’ on glass.
My stained glass doors and windows are made to commission and range from traditional Victorian and art-deco designs to very modern and abstract windows – in some cases for historic buildings. I work in both Surrey and East Devon where the seascapes and natural environment provide much of my inspiration.
My ‘journey’ in clay started with burnished earthenware, fired with sawdust and seaweed to give random, smokey, patterns to enhance the traditional rounded vessels.
Then I discovered the fun to be had with porcelain paper clay-being stronger and more forgiving than pure porcelain, you can work with very thin sheets which I texture with anything from shells to wallpaper.
Pots are assembled and then pinched, torn and distorted to resemble shells and sealife. Most recently I have been using the same clay to make a series of ‘portrait’ pots –some dark and some humorous.
I have work in a number of galleries in the South West and regularly exhibit at Open Studios in Devon and in Surrey. Member of the London Potters’ Association and the Lyme Regis Town Mill Arts Guild.
Jane's ceramics are priced from £30 - 70 and her stained glass commissions from £450 - 4500.
