Artists Statement

Jane Askey is a painter exploring floral subject matter through still life. The resonance of objects and their associations with time and place are central to the paintings.  Flowers from the garden, vintage fabrics, found papers and decorative ceramics are combined to create a personal interpretation of colour and pattern which captures the essence of places and experiences.

A graduate of Manchester Polytechnic in 1987, Jane’s training in printed textile design has influenced her current work. Elements pertinent to textiles are central to her approach to painting: pattern, rhythms and echoes of colour are investigated with an intense sensitivity to space and balance.

“I paint in my studio working directly from seasonal flowers and foliage picked from the garden, or a simple bunch of wild flowers.  The floral element is a central starting point and from there a specific story will build. Other objects are added as the painting evolves, there is no fixed preconceived plan, but a strong sense of the mood I want to create.  I like to experiment with media, creating a pure graphic quality with gouache.  The introduction of acrylic, collage and linear elements, provide textural depth to my paintings. Objects and photographs from foreign travel have extended my points of reference,“

Throughout the last 19 years Jane has worked as a university lecturer in Scotland and Yorkshire and has recently re-located to Leicester. Her paintings have been exhibited in galleries throughout Yorkshire, the Midlands and the South West and her work is also held in private collections.
